Great Recreation Areas Encino-area recreation areas include Balboa Park (tennis, basketball, baseball, soccer, picnic areas, bike paths), the adjoining Woodley Park (golf, jogging/walking, picnic areas), Balboa + Encino Golf Courses (two side-by-side public courses), The Japanese Gardens (flowers, rock gardens and streams, frequented by heron and other waterfowl), Lake Balboa (27 acre stocked lake surrounded by another 50-plus acres of open space), Encino Velodrome (built for the '84 Olympic Games, now open to the public) and a Dog Park (5 fenced, grassy acres; separate big and small dog areas). At Encino's southern border lies the Santa Monica Mountains/San Vicente Mountain Park (Nike-Ajax supersonic anti-aircraft missile launch site with self-guided tours + reservoir, city, ocean and valley views, hiking + mountain biking). Culture, Shopping + Entertainment Encino is home to and close to numerous entertainment and cultural centers, including Skirball Cultural Center, numerous movie theatres, Pierce College (host to, among other things, the San Fernando Valley Symphony Orchestra), the Valley Cultural Center; the Getty Museum and UCLA are less than 10 miles away. Schools, Food + Safety Encino has very good primary schools and is close to higly-rated secondary and higher education centers. It is home to many fine restaurants and specialty stores, including specialty markets Gelson's and Trader Joe's, and has its own hospital, Encino Hospital. The office and professional buildings are well-maintained and convenient to get to. |
